HOW TO STYLE A CAPE

Good afternoon everyone and happy Friday. So far my day has consisted of putting up the Christmas tree, shopping, admin work and now I am finally getting round to writing this post. Today’s post is about Capes, I adore wearing them, so I thought I would pick some of my favourite ones. Why not take a scroll down and have a look. Do let me know if any of them catch your eye!

CAPES

Right let us begin with my cape which is from a label called Shahini Fakhourie. The founder is based in Miami Florida, her design process begins with one central idea. Always allowing form and function to guide the journey. This cape comes with a two way zipper and a back patch pocket detail. So when it comes to styling a cape one thing to keep in mind is that it will add volume to the upper body. Therefore go for some form fitting bottoms like skinny trousers, jeans or pencil skirts. Here I am wearing a pair of tailored trousers to balance out my shape. The trousers that I am wearing are from the H&M AW20 Studio Collection.

For those of you who are on the petite size be careful not to get a cape that is too heavy or oversized. I opted to style my cape with my linen shirt from Zara, I absolutely adore the peter pan collar and thought it be great to layer this under the cape. As for my shoes I went for my leopard print sock boots from Public Desire to add a little more drama. My bag is from Taylor Yates and to complete my look, yes I know it’s those Illesteva Cat-Eye sunglasses again!

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

So whether you are heading out for brunch or just running some errands, capes are very versatile to incorporate into you daily outfits. If it’s a formal setting go for single tone capes as they will look chic and put together. Now if it’s a casual look then you can play around with patterns and bold colours should you choose to.

STYLE WITH JEANS AND TROUSERS

As I mentioned earlier, the cape will create volume, therefore go for skinny jeans and tailored trousers preferably in a darker tone. Faux leather trousers will also work perfectly well, teamed with knee high boots. One other way I like to style a cape is with some cream coloured skinny trousers tucked into a pair of riding style knee high boots. Then I add a black roll neck jumper and finally wear a camel coloured cape on top to finish off the outfit!

Your post about how to style a cape couldn’t come at a better time. I do have a wool cape which I bought second hand a couple of years ago, and I haven’t worn it in a long time. Now that we are in for sub-zero temperatures, I will be giving it a whirl soon. I’m loving how you are wearing your top’s collar over the cape. Not something I will be able to do though, as I will definitely be wearing a warm woollen scarf 🙂 xxx

I love capes but I’m often frustrated at how non-functional they can be, as you can’t carry a shoulder or cross-body bag with them, so one hand is always occupied with holding a purse. I also find that they are not super warm if you’re in a colder climate, so your window for wearing them is very small and you need to wear a lot of layers underneath to stay warm.

I totally agree with wearing a slim bottom – I recently wore a vintage Welsh cape with a midi-skirt and boots (here: https://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com/2020/11/bigass-weekend-wrap-up-caped-brunch.html). I also have a blue and purple cape, also vintage Welsh.
