HOW TO STYLE A SHOULDER PADDED T-SHIRT

Good morning everyones today’s post is based around this black shoulder padded t-shirt. This ’80s staple doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. It looks like our love of all things shoulder padded is sticking around for a while longer. For most of us when we think of shoulder pads, we often think of silly pictures of celebrities, family or relatives from the ’80s.

Shoulder pads were very popular down the runway for the fall/winter ’19 collections. With the likes of Balmain, Balenciaga and Maison Margiela to name a few. So it was no surprise when The Frankie Shop came out with their padded t-shirt that both of the black and white ones were snapped up instantaneously. I am still waiting to get my hands on the white one. Hoping they come back in stock, so for now this Zara one is doing the job!

Before I get started onto my ensemble here is a little back story to shoulder pads. Ironically, the shoulder pads actually originated with men, when they were invented in 1977 as a piece of football padding. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that the shoulder pad started to cross over to women’s wear. In 1931 Elsa Schiaparelli was the first to bring them into her ready-to-wear collection. When Joan Crawford wore a formal gown with oversized ruffle shoulders in the movie Letty Lynton, well that sent the look into Hollywood mainstream.

The ’80s really embraced the shoulder pads and made them what they are today. However today’s fashion in general is losing its gender restrictions. Gone are the days when women wore only clothes from the women’s section and vice versa for men. Nowadays they are both borrowing from each other. Shoulder pads are used in a less restricted way these days in terms of gender.

PADDED T-SHIRT

Right lets get started with my padded black T-shirt which is from Zara. Like I mentioned earlier I really wanted the Padded T-shirt from The Frankie Shop which I had come across on Net-A-Porter. But they had sold out rather quickly. So I decided to look elsewhere and then came across this one on Zara. I must say I am not disappointed by it at all. I love the silhouette it gives off when teamed with skinny jeans or slim leg trousers. If you want to accentuate your waist then this is one of the best ways to do so!

RIPPED JEANS

So Moving on and I teamed my padded t-shirt with my black ripped jeans from TopShop. These are their ‘Jamie’ high waisted pair, it has to be high waisted to work really well together. The ankle grazing jeans are made from super stretchy cotton blend, for TopShop’s signature soft denim feel. This iconic style includes a top button closure and multiple pockets. Love the all black look with a hint of edginess courtesy of the rips on the knee.

BLACK BAG

Now when it came to choosing a bag I wanted to keep it black and opted for my Teddy Blake Bella bag. This cute and handy bag works so well and is ideal for all my bits and bobs. The bag can be carried either cross body or hand held like I have done here. I absolutely adore it, Teddy Blake kindly gifted me this bag.

TUXEDO BLAZER

Next and onto my Blazer, and this one is from Karen Millen. The blazer is one of the easiest ways to amp up a look. Whether it’s oversized or tailored thats up to you. I tend to mix it up, there are days I will wear my oversized one and there are those other days were I feel like wearing my tailored one. This is what I am wearing here, it’s is my black tuxedo blazer with it’s fancy lapels. The impact of a well tailored blazer is enough to make an outfit look put together.

NUDE SHOES

As for my shoes I wanted to break away from the black and have styled my outfit with these nude Steve Madden shoes. Love that they are simple yet elegant, the heels give me that elevation that I like to have.

ACCESSORIES

Finally for my accessories first up I am wearing my Filippo Loreti Venice Moon Rose Gold watch. Next and on my lips I am wearing the shade Topped With Brandy from M.A.C. Finally I grabbed my mirrored aviator sunglasses from Le Specs in the LTD Prince style to complete my look.

Good post. I learn something new and challenging on sites I stumbleupon everyday. It’s always helpful to read through articles from other writers and use a little something from other sites.
