Here is my take on styling houndstooth for autumn and winter. You may have noticed this print pop up during autumn each season. Houndstooth has long been the print of choice for everyone from Coco Chanel to the Royals. A top favourite which can be seen everywhere from high end to high street stores.
This iconic black and white check print comes in so many variety of garments. It also comes in a large print as well as a small print. Leaving its mark on everything from trousers, dresses, pencil skirts, blazers, coats to even shoes now! I think there is something for every one to try out. To tap into the trend why not opt for a statement dress or you could start off with something small like a pair of kitten heel shoes.
I opted for a bold look and wore these houndstooth waistcoat and trousers. The print I am wearing is very small, making it look more grey in colour. The material is very thick and one which is sure to keep me warm.
At the time I remember I was looking for something that I could wear to a meeting but I didn’t want it to be your usual straight cut trousers. Therefore when I came across these wide leg trousers I knew straight away that I had to purchase them. The wasitcoat is so edgy and different that I thought they both would look really fabulous together. In my opinion I don’t think I was wrong! Both the houndstooth waistcoat and the trousers are from Topshop. I’m sure I can’t safely say that they are vintage yet. Although I have had them for a good few number of years. Also they were part of the first Kate Moss collection which she collaborated with Topshop.
The waistcoat is capable of transcending social situations and dress codes, yet it gives you enough room to experiment with layers and also remain stylish. I could have gone for a very masculine look with a white shirt buttoned up and a black tie. However on this occasion I decided to give the ensemble a feminine touch by wearing a blouse. The Houndstooth waistcoat is tailored to a great finish which gives me the silhouette that I want. It fits snugly and thats how I love it, the wool material is thick enough to keep me warm. Also features an elegant curved shaped lapel with black piping. The small buttons going down the front are covered in the same material and the two ersatz pockets also have black piping too. At the back there is an adjustable belt which rarely gets adjusted I must admit. All in all a super stylish houndstooth waistcoat, if I do say so myself!
Now for the trousers, these have wide legs and turn ups at the bottom. They also has a wide band at the top that goes around the waist and has a zip fastening and two hooks at the top. Again the material is in a thick wool and one that will keep me warm during the autumn and winter season. I can style them in so many different ways. Another option I could have gone for would be to pair the trousers with a black polo neck jumper and a long black coat. They are so versatile and warm, I always end up wearing them during the autumn and winter seasons. Why don’t you try them with a oversized white shirt and a grey coat to tie in the look.
This ecru coloured blouse is from Ted Baker and is one of my favourite. It has these buttons on the sleeve which gives it that added uniqueness. Frills at the front adds to the feminine vibe of the blouse. Such a delicate and pretty blouse that instantly make a masculine ensemble look feminine.
As for the shoes I am wearing these black ankle sock boots which are from Ego Official. Sock boots are the trend right now, but they happen to be what I have been wearing for a number of years now as I have small ankles and calfs. Therefore, most of the boots I tried on happen to be very wide at the top. Back then the knee high boots that I bought were not called sock boots but stretchy boots instead. Minor details hey, I am very happy to see this trend as I will be adding a few more sock boots to my wardrobe in the coming weeks and months.
To keep in with the black boots and the black piping on the houndstooth waistcoat I opted for my vintage mini black bag. This bag is just so cute in my opinion and in this trapezium shape it just stands out. It has enough room for keys, lipstick and a compact, but not big enough to carry an iPhone seven or eight. But it is a vintage bag and back then we had the flip phones which would fit perfectly into this bag. There are so many mini bags in stores right now that a slightly bigger than my one that would have enough room and space for an iPhone seven or eight.
Finally, to give the ensemble some more edginess I wore my River Island oval white framed sunglasses. These are so bold and in your face I just adore them. They are very Willy Wonka-esque I’m talking about Johnny Depp’s take on Willy Wonka. This is another reason in my opinion to wear them. I have seen another pair of white framed sunglasses that has caught my eye. I recently saw them whilst I was browsing on Net-A-Porter, and they happen to be from Elizabeth and James.
