Supporting Black Owned Businesses

Good morning everyone, I have been wanting to do put together a list of black owned businesses that I have recently discovered for a while now. So I hope you will join me in checking out these businesses and supporting them, by either purchasing from them if you can at this current climate or even by following them on social media.

Fashion & Design

SIKA Design

SIKA was founded in 2005 by creative director Phyllis Taylor with the vision that fashion has the power and potential to make a positive contribution to society. The ethos behind SIKA is not only to produce quality ‘made in Africa’ garments for the international market, but also to ultimately prove that garment production can successfully have social and environmental responsibilities at its core.

For SIKA that means paying fair wages, creating employment and making a meaningful difference within the Ghanaian community. All SIKA garments are designed in London and handmade in Ghana  (West Africa) by our skilled garment production team. Not only do we produce our own collections, we have also created collaborative lines for international brands such as ASOS (SIKA x ASOS), The Vogue Talents Corner (yoox) and Beams Japan.

AAKS

A A K S was founded by Akosua Afriyie-Kumi with the goal of introducing the world to her favourite weaving techniques done by the women of Ghana while also creating and igniting sustainable jobs within Africa. Handcrafted in Ghana, A A K S creates bags in styles that maintain the spirit and durability of their ancestral counterparts characterised by bright exuberant colours.

The essence of A A K S design philosophy is a complex combination of thoughts, design element which come from a critical attention to craftsmanship, authenticity and ethical values in their production ; while having a strong sense of identity and quality. Each collection silhouette is unique and tells a different story through detail, colour and shape. Akosua is connected to every stage of the design and production process to oversee and ensure that the end result is imbued with the spirit and soul worthy of the A A K S stamp.

JADE SWIM

JADE Swim is different, unique, meaningful. Simple but more than basic. The right cut of jade brings out beauty. It’s classic with an edge. This swimwear brand by fashion editor & stylist Brittany Kozerskicombines her minimalist aesthetic with innovative silhouettes and unique design details.

The collection is carefully crafted from luxe fabric with shape retention technology to smooth and sculpt the body. UV protection and resistance to chlorine, suntan lotions, & oils ensure long term wearability. Designed with multifunctional versatility in mind, these styles can be worn from day to night, from beach to city, as swim or ready-to-wear.

MWINDA

MWINDA means LIGHT. More specifically the traditional African Petrol lamp in Kitunba/Lingala language in Congo. The brand is a mixture of comtemporary yet vintage with inspiration of the beautiful African culture. Joelle Ngolatsie is a Congolese fashion designer and founder of Mwinda. Raised between Congo-Brazzaville and South Africa, currently based in Dubai.

The young and dedicated designer is a business management major, her Passion for fashion cultivated right from childhood. The Mwinda woman is independent, confident, classy, sexy in a modest and captivated way, she is unique and extremely aesthetical soul.

LISOU

Lisou is a London-based fashion brand specialising in beautiful silk pieces with a twist. Having grown up in Tanzania, head designer Rene Macdonald moved to the UK at a young age but always travelled back and forth to Africa where her family were based, a place that continues to influence and inspire her. A former stylist, avid vintage collector and self-confessed bold dresser herself, Rene has a unique way of combining unexpected colours and creating vibrant prints which makes each of her pieces special and stand out.

The Lisou collection is full of wearable, classic shapes with a modern twist and are made from the finest silks. All prints are designed in-house by Rene, which makes every Lisou print exclusive. One of our core beliefs is to make a positive global impact; to that end we donate the proceeds from one piece per collection directly to helping young Africans with medical and educational needs.

In addition to this, we run an annual initiative in partnership with local schools supporting creative arts in our local community. We believe in quality above all else, and a return to the days of slow fashion and treasure box investment pieces. All our products are designed in London, finished in Portugal, and delivered directly to you.

We design for everyday extraordinary women like you who embody class while setting their own rules.

NUBIAN SKIN

Ade completely understands how frustrating it can be when you can’t find products in your own nude – that’s why she decided to create Nubian Skin, the lingerie and hosiery brand for women of colour. She hopes you will find your perfect item! If you don’t, please don’t hesitate to reach out with suggestions, they are always working on something new!

So many stunning pieces, I love this! I also like the diversity in photography style for their ads/promotions. The classic high fashion-stiff lines-skinny girls thing works and all, but it’s so flipping boring after a while. More of this in the industry, please!
