Summer and Maxi dress go hand in hand for me. There is no better way to look elegant and put together I find then when I am wearing a maxi dress. Its one of the easiest items of clothing to style and is just so effortless specially on vacation/holiday. The swooping hemline is all the statement you will need. A great maxi is a reliable summer purchase, it’s transitional in terms of both season and occasion. It will take you through the height of summer as well as being a great transitional piece for Autumn/Winter. Depending on how you accessorise the maxi dress, you can look either casual or elegant. Add a pair of trainers/sneakers and you will get what I am talking about.
Here is a little back story to maxi dresses. If your like me then you will appreciate these little snippets about how certain trends and pieces of garments have transcended the test of time. So the maxi dress started in the 1940s, where stylish socialites and the hottest Hollywood starlets wore brightly coloured dresses with long, full-tiered skirts. Designers started to draw inspirations from patio or squaw dresses from traditional Native American and Southwestern designs.
Although the patio dress soon went out of fashion, this ankle-grazing dress style was revived during the 1960s. Women from all walks of life embraced the colourful, free-flowing maxi dress. Again by the late ’70s, these long, billowing dresses had once again been relegated.
So after the sky-high hemlines of the early 21st century, the alternative to the mini-skirts was sought after. Women wanted a more comfortable, low-key alternative. Today the maxi dress comes in cotton and other fine fabrics, which keeps us feeling cool and breezy, even on the hottest of days. On the other hand layering it up for colder days.
There is an array of maxi dresses from the floral to minimal, pleated cotton to sumptuous silks. They come in all styles and in every body shape, but it’s not really about the style of the dress but more about how you accessorise and style it! The maxi dress is synonymous with “event only” ensemble or as a boho chic one with sandals. However, they are one of the most transitional pieces for Autumn/Winter too. Whether you layer it over a tee or wear it with a jacket, your sure to get the maximum wear out of your maxi dress.
Now lets get onto my ensemble and to this beautiful billowing orange ASOS DESIGN backless halter pleated maxi dress. A sucker for pleats I really could not resist this dress when I came across it. The perfect holiday/vacation maxi dress in my opinion. It comes in a halter neck with a tie closure. The open back is just so gorgeous and daring and the dress falls loosely over my body. The halter neck style is one of my favourite and I absolutely adore how it emphasises my shoulders.
Next and onto my accessories, here for a daytime look I was bare foot, just love walking barefoot around the pool and on the beach. However as we were headed out for lunch I opted to wear one of my flat sandals. By all means wear what you feel comfortable in or what the occasion entails. As for my sunglasses I wore my oval white ones from River Island. This instantly amps up my look and gives it that edginess I am looking for. Such an affordable pair of sunglasses that truly has exceeded its cost-per-wear!
My statement earrings are from Bees Jewellery. Adore how these work so well with this maxi dress and make it look more dressier. It comes with a matching ring too, gold paired with orange or red compliments each other rather well.
For my finishing touches I wore my current favourite red matt lipstick from Lime Crime Velvetines. My shade is in Red Velvet worn here with M.A.C Ruby Woo lipliner. A beautiful intense red which works so well with my skin tone. As it was a scorcher of a day I decided to pull my hair back in a low bun. All ready for my lunch date!

For daytime: When wearing a maxi for the day, either go for light airy ones that will keep you cool in hot climates or layer them up in a cooler one. They are a great way to make a statement for day wear. Go for ruffles, pleats, layers and cut outs to give you some edge and really make a statement.
